After reaching an all-time high in 2015, consumer interest in autonomous driving systems has fallen in 2016, reflecting hesitance about the reliance of self-driving technology, according to a recent survey from the In-Vehicle UX (IVX) group at Strategy Analytics.

According to Reuters (link http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mobileye-tesla-idUSKCN11K2T8), Mobileye has broken ties with Tesla Motors because it felt the Silicon Valley firm was “pushing the envelope in terms of safety” with the design of its Autopilot driver-assistance system. "It is not designed to cover all possible crash situations in a safe manner," Amnon Shashua, who is also chief technology officer at the Israel-based maker of collision detection and driver assistance systems, told Reuters.

New research by Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle of the University of Michigan Sustainable Worldwide Transportation indicates that currently, in the US the average occupant of a light-duty vehicle spends about an hour a day travelling—time that could potentially be put to more productive use. Indeed, increased productivity is one of the expected benefits of self-driving vehicles.

Uber is deploying fourteen self-driving cars on the streets of Pittsburgh in a real-world test of the technology.
