New contactless technology is being pioneered on the UK’s 803 M6 Toll, which is operated by Midland Expressway. The technology is being developed in partnership with the UK bank 5582 Barclays and will enable drivers to make contactless payments when using the road with their debit and credit cards. Midland Expressway is currently installing the necessary contactless payment terminals ahead of the launch.
A pilot scheme is scheduled to begin later this year and if this proves successful, the system could become fully operational by February 2012. The technology is expected to improve the flow of traffic through the road's toll plazas, which in turn is expected to improve journey times.
