Q-Free wins its second tag order from South Africa in as many months

Q-Free has received its second multi-million dollar tag order from ETC, a joint venture led by Kapsch TrafficCom in South Africa, for use on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project.

108 Q-Free has received its second multi-million dollar tag order from ETC, a joint venture led by 81 Kapsch TrafficCom in South Africa, for use on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project. This major project will see multilane open road tolling (ORT) on 185km, in phase one, on freeways in Gauteng Province. The value of the latest order for Q-Free is US$3.58 million and follows the US$4.6 million tag contract placed with the company just over two months ago.

E-tolling for South Africa’s Gauteng Freeway improvement project

Following a series of consultations with stakeholders, South Africa’s Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), led by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, Cabinet, has recommended that the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) should proceed with the implementation of an e-tolling system.

Successful start of e-tolling in South Africa

This month saw the start of e-tolling on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) in South Africa, one of the largest electronic toll collection systems for open road tolling in the world, following an announcement by the country’s Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, in November. Kapsch TrafficCom reports that the number of active accounts has been consistently rising following the commencement of the e-toll project in Gauteng, on 3 December.
