Micromobility firm Voi and location tech specialist Drover AI are beginning a three-month project in Finland's capital Helsinki.

Drover's PathPilot application will be installed on e-scooters in the city; it notifies the user with a beep if it is ridden on the pavement or parked incorrectly.

PathPilot uses artificial intelligence and machine vision to see exactly where the scooter is moving, locating them more accurately than GPS, Drover says.

"Artificial intelligence reliably recognises whether you are riding on a sidewalk, bike path or highway, and it can automatically slow down the speed of the electric scooter when, for example, moving onto the sidewalk, says Hannu Oskala, Voi's director of social relations.

Oskala says Voi will "test the applicability of the technology to Helsinki's traffic environment" and see how user behaviour changes with PathPilot, while collecting accurate data on scooter locations.

The project is supported by Helsinki's Forum Virium and Business Helsinki.
