ITS (UK) confirms shortlists for awards

The event will also feature a tour of Cubic's facility

ITS (UK) has confirmed digital road solutions and connected and autonomous vehicle (C/AV) testing techniques are among the shortlists for two categories in its upcoming awards. 

A video analytics platform and a bus occupancy data solution are also in the running for the top prizes, which ITS (UK) president Steve Norris will announce in at a ceremony at its Members’ Day at Cubic Transportation Systems’ Salfords facility on 25 November.

Salfords is a village in the borough of Reigate and Banstead in Surrey, England.

The two shortlists are:

ITS Project of the Year Award

• C/AV Test Bed - Amey Consulting and Transport for West Midlands, Midlands Future Mobility The Data Hub breaks down the Midlands Future Mobility test route into “scenes, allowing users to plan routes for C/AV tests which consider specific parameters
• Connected Digital Roads – Costain The UK’s first demonstration of ability to directly influence vehicle speeds on a live motorway using connected vehicle technologies, proving the viability of this end-to-end Cooperative Intelligent Transport Service
• Digital Roads - National Highways, WSP and KPMG The vision for a digital revolution; harnessing data, technology and connectivity to improve the way the UK Strategic Road Network is designed, built, operated and used

Innovative Use of Technology Award

• Live Bus Occupancy Information for Passengers - Transport Scotland, Traveline Scotland and Trapeze Group The project brought together almost every Scottish bus operator to provide on-board occupancy information, allowing passengers to avoid busy buses throughout the peak of the pandemic
• NEVFMA (The Network Emissions and Vehicle Flow Management Adjustment) project - Aimsun, supported by EarthSense, Yunex Traffic and Oxfordshire County Council for Highways England Using modelling and ITS to predict and make improvements in traffic flow targeting the mitigation of harmful nitrogen dioxide emissions on National Highways and local roads in Oxfordshire where contamination has regularly exceeded permitted levels
• Video Analytics Service Platform – Costain Increasing the capability of NH CCTV operators to detect and respond to incidents by blending video analytics from project partner Vivacity with NH’s largely analogue CCTV system

ITS (UK) secretary general Jennie Martin says: “We’ve had some really strong entries from Members this year, especially in the Eric Sampson Early Careers category, where people who could well have won in previous years not even making the top three. Our shortlist for the two technical awards underlines just how innovative our members have been over the past year, and how much of a difference technology is making to transport in the UK.”

The event will also feature a tour of Cubic's facility as well as a debate on reducing the environmental effects of transport and a series of short presentations from different members. 

The Awards are supported by Cubic, WSP and White Willow Consulting.
