Outsight has produced a wide-ranging free-to-download White Paper on the uses of Lidar technology.
The company says it is a guide to understanding the challenges of using Lidar data in real-time Smart City applications and also aims to outline the available solutions for those interested in learning more about working with 3D data for Smart Cities.
Lidar can be used in a wide range of scenarios, including smart intersections, tolling and access control, traffic monitoring, reducing traffic congestion and monitoring vulnerable road users (VRUs).
"However, although Lidar has already proven itself as an attractive technology with good price-performance ratios compared to other types of 2D and 3D sensors, we still don’t see it being used so often in the context of Smart Cities," Outsight suggests.
The main barriers to wider adoption of the technology are the difficulty in understanding and processing 3D raw data, "which is sparse and fundamentally different from the 2D RGB images that computer vision experts are used to", as well as the lack of any standards in a market with over 80 different hardware manufacturers, it continues.
"Depending on the Lidar processing solution you choose, Lidar application development can be either unbelievably easy and fast with a Lidar pre-processor, or inefficient, long, risky, and expensive in the case of in-house development."
Outsight believes it has solved many of the challenges associated with Lidar processing "over many years and dozens of projects, learning many lessons from them".
These experiences led to the development of the company's 3D pre-processor - plug-and-play software that turns Lidar raw data into actionable information that can be integrated into any ITS application and works with any Lidar.
