The UK’s 817 Transport for Greater Manchester is planning a "Dynamic Road Network Efficiency and Travel Information System Solution", designed to enable the administration and delivery of schemes to improve the management of the transport network in Greater Manchester.

The city is tendering a contract worth up to US$23.5 million over six years to build an intelligent transport system, covering active traffic management of the highway network, traffic signal priority measures (initially for the local bus network), service performance management systems, and an operational control platform.

The system will integrate data from a variety of data sources, including bus, rail, tram and highway services. Data included covers public transport information, road activities data, emergency services, CCTV and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition), passive sensors and automatic traffic counter data, event data, car park data and transport cost data.

Those selected to carry out the project will be responsible for the system design, system hosting, back-office system hardware and software.

Transport for Greater Manchester wants a "multi-modal passenger information system", including both static and real-time data, which can be delivered over an "open source information exchange".

It will include an online journey planning tool, mobile apps, SMS and other messaging to mobile phone media, and internet media.
