ITS Australia Awards 2025 finalists announced

ITS Australia has announced 32 finalists for the 15th Annual ITS Australia Awards, with winners announced at a ceremony on 13 February 2025 in Perth, Western Australia.

The six award categories are: Smart Transport Infrastructure Award, Intelligent Mobility Award, Excellence in Transport Data Award, Excellence in Research and Development Award, Connected and Automated Vehicle Award, and Young Professional Award. 

The recipients of the prestigious Max Lay Lifetime Achievement Award and the inaugural Women of the Year Award will be announced in the coming weeks. 

“The lineup of finalists in this year’s awards program is exceptional, showcasing a deep talent pool of individuals and teams from industry, government and academia working tirelessly to deliver a better transport future through the deployment of new technologies,” said ITS Australia president Silje Troseth.

"The shortlisted projects represent an impressive and diverse range of transport technology solutions, ranging from C-ITS-enabled vehicles trials to support vulnerable road users, to innovative mobility solutions focussed on suburban and remote transport disadvantage, and world-leading research projects with the potential to revolutionise traffic management. The innovation demonstrated by the finalists is remarkable and once again highlights our industry’s capacity to collaborate." 

It is the first time the event has been held in Perth. ITS Australia CEO Susan Harris said: “To enrich this milestone event, ITS Australia will also deliver the ‘WA ITS Showcase 2024,’ an educational programme spotlighting Western Australia’s impressive transport technologies. Running on 12-13 February, this prelude to the awards ceremony offers East Coast visitors a unique chance to engage with Perth’s vibrant ITS landscape.”

Safer Urban Mobility for Vulnerable Road Users Through Cooperative Awareness and Shared Perception

In Sydney’s Darling Harbour, Lexus Australia showcases safer urban mobility with Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), focusing on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). Highlights include intersection movement assistance, connected cycling with OBU Lite (ultra-lightweight DSRC), and Traffic Analytics for pedestrian collision notifications, reducing collision risks in urban areas.

 

C-ITS Trial - Safety for vulnerable road users around school zones

Tasmania successfully undertook Future Technology Readiness investigation and development with C-ITS technologies to improve driver safety awareness for vulnerable road users at school zones. The trial tested the electronic signs I2V (Infrastructure to Vehicle) and V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure) capability by monitoring vehicle movement at school zones and distributing real-time visual messages about the road environment directly into the vehicle to help improve driver awareness, decision-making and improve road safety.

C-ITS has the potential to accelerate the realisation of our goals to improve safety, productivity, mobility, and sustainability for Australians. Our C-ITS Roadmaps main purpose is to establish our C-ITS Vision, C-ITS Deployment Strategy, and a short- to medium term roadmap with actionable steps to realise the benefits of C-ITS in WA, a first on a national level, by outlining drivers for C-ITS from national and international policy and strategy.

Smart Freeway Live decision support tool

MRWA and Aimsun are set to revolutionise traffic management with the launch of the groundbreaking Real-Time Decision Support Tool by February 2025, specifically designed for the Mitchell Smart Freeway (Southbound). This state-of-the-art tool empowers operators with instantaneous, data-driven insights into network conditions, dramatically enhancing incident response capabilities. The project replicates the sophisticated STREAMS ramp metering algorithm through a highly innovative R&D initiative.

 

Real-time Analytics for Road Traffic Management

The University of Queensland

The University of Queensland (UQ), Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), and Transmax have developed three key real-time analytics technologies to innovate road traffic management as outputs of an Australian Research Council’s Linkage project. These include novel methods for incident prediction in large-scale urban networks, anomaly detection in traffic sensor data, and queue estimation at signalised intersections, enhancing situational awareness and predictive capability in real-time traffic management.

 

Virtual Reality (VR) Cycling Simulator for Interactive Visualisation of Proposed Street Design Scenarios

UNSW Sydney (City Futures, TRACSLab@UNSW, and rCITI research groups)

UNSW, in collaboration with TfNSW and iMove Australia, developed and utilised an immersive Virtual Reality cycling simulator as a method to communicate proposed street designs to stakeholders and communities. In the simulator, several alternative cycling infrastructure options were visualised on 3D environments (modelled after real NSW streets) and presented to volunteer cyclists. The platform enhances data-driven decision-making by facilitating a more realistic experience for collecting community feedback before implementation.

Reducing the impact of Major Projects via the use of Virtual Variable Messages and Real Time Messaging via dedicated Mobile Application

Traffic-ALT is a newly developed app to support those affected by major project disruptions such as the Armadale Train Line shutdown in Western Australia. Traffic ALT uses Main Roads’ real time data to provide location and direction of travel specific Real-Time Audio Traffic Alerts such as Abnormal Live Congestion, travel time Alerts and customised Virtual VMS. The application works though phones or car stereo Bluetooth and supports iOS and Android.

 

AI-Assisted Mapping of Pedestrian Infrastructure for Enhanced Urban Mobility

Footpath.ai, in collaboration with Waverley Council, has deployed an innovative AI-assisted mapping system for pedestrian infrastructure. This project enhances urban mobility by accurately mapping footpaths, amenities, and accessibility features, ensuring high data quality through AI and human collaboration. The initiative covers nearly 70 km of footpaths in the Waverley, NSW LGA, promoting safer and more accessible urban environments.

 

Integrated connected data for safer, more efficient transport operations

This project harnesses cutting-edge big data from connected vehicles and bicycles to transform urban traffic management. By integrating real-time GPS and telematics data, the project enhances traffic efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Innovative methodologies, including deep reinforcement learning and data fusion, optimise intersections, improve road safety for vulnerable users, and reduce emissions, setting a new standard for modern, data-driven traffic systems.

 

Optimise Replacement Bus Services During Network Disruptions- A Data Driven Approach

Transport for NSW has collaborated with the University of Technology Sydney to develop a data-driven solution for estimating emergency bus service demand and optimising bus routes and deployment during network disruptions. Revolutionising Traffic Incident Detection with Video Analytics and Deep Learning

Transurban’s Automatic Incident Detection (AID) System provides technology-based situational awareness for our Traffic Control Room Operators (TCROs), that supplements our traditional 'eyes on the road' video surveillance method. In anticipation of the increased operator workload required when the West Gate Tunnel is onboarded in 2025, performance optimisation was achieved through innovative application of deep learning capability in the Citilog AID System.

Australian-first tech gives overheight trucks a real-time reality check

In an Australian first, Transport for NSW has combined the Light Detection and Ranging scanning technology with Automatic Number Plate Recognition software. The six-month trial will see trucks scanned as they pass under the sensor, and their height and number plate information will be gathered and instantaneously displayed to drivers on the overhead Variable Message Sign (VMS). The first site is now live on the M1 at the Mount White.

MRWA in collaboration with Attentis and Telstra installed environment monitoring solutions with flood monitoring functionality, live video streaming capability, and diverse communications connectivity. Utilising Attentis Intelligent Multi-sensor devices which have integrated visual+ infrared cameras, multiple floodway water level measurement capabilities, live weather, BOM compliant. The device ensures communications to our Operations Centre, is reliable in remote areas using multiple communications protocols, including satellite and provides live image verification in remote+areas.

Transport for NSW Level Crossing Technology Trial

Innovative new radar-activated signs designed to improve safety at railway level crossings are being trialled in regional NSW.
The Level Crossing Safety Technology Trial is designed to increase driver awareness and reduce the associated risks for motorists and trains at level crossings. Three trial sites operating at Narromine and Bribbaree feature augmented stop signs and advance warning signs with LEDs.
