ST Engineering is operating a free on-demand autonomous vehicle (AV) shuttle service in Sentosa, an island resort in Singapore, until 15 November.
Singapore’s secretary of transport, Loh Ngai Seng, says: “This trial will provide important insights into commuter experience and the interaction of AVs with other road users, as we seek to enhance urban mobility by deploying AV technology safely in our towns.”
The company says riders can hail an autonomous shuttle via the Ride Now Sentosa mobile app or at kiosks along a 5.7km route that includes destinations such as Siloso Point and Palawan Beach.
Developed in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Sentosa Development Corporation, two autonomous minibuses and two smaller shuttles are available on weekdays from 10am to midday and from 2pm to 4pm.
Each vehicle is equipped with radar, lidar, GPS, odometry and computer vision to help sense the environment and navigate in mixed traffic.
A safety driver will remain on board each vehicle to take control if necessary. The shuttles will display electronic signs that they are operating autonomously to road users and pedestrians.
