Gebze İzmir İşletme ve Bakım (GİİB) has begun work on the 22-year contract for the Gebze-Izmir motorway in Turkey and will be responsible for pre-operational services, operation, maintenance and toll management on behalf of Otoyol, the concessionaire for the Turkish General Directorate of Highways (KGM).  Egis is a 50 per cent shareholder in GIIB, along with shareholders of the concession company.

The Gebze-İzmir project is a toll motorway procured by KGM under a build, operate and transfer (BOT) model.  It includes 420 km of motorway (2x3 lanes) between Gebze on the north shore of İzmit Bay and İzmir, as well as a 3,000 m suspension bridge crossing İzmit Bay, three tunnels with an approximate cumulative length of 6km and 20 toll stations.

The project is to be implemented in two phases. The first phase includes the 3,000m Izmit Bay suspension bridge which is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world by the length of its central span (1,550m). The level of traffic for the first phase is expected to be about 40,000 vehicles per day. The second phase includes the remaining 362 km of motorway, two tunnels of 1,700m and 1,020m as well as the ring road of Bursa, the fourth largest city in the country.

The completed project is expected to be in operation by mid-2020.
