Zebra programme funding will see new electric buses in towns, villages and cities in England

UK bus operator Stagecoach Group is to invest in a nationwide automatic vehicle location and real time fleet management system for its 7,000 strong regional bus fleet. A new NFC Phone application developed by Vix is enabling a UK first for Stagecoach bus passengers in Cambridge. The innovative trial, which could lead to a nationwide roll out across select bus and rail services next year, is enabling the small cross section of participating bus users to receive, store and validate their bus tickets using their mobile phone.

East Midlands Trains in the UK, part of the transport operator Stagecoach Group which operates trains and buses throughout the UK, is expanding its smartcard scheme that will allows rail users to purchase and store rail season tickets on a re-usable electronic smart card instead of using traditional paper tickets. The programme is operating under the UK government’s ITSO smartcard scheme for interoperable transport.
