A new autonomous vehicle (AV) demonstration zone has launched to allow researchers to hone the technology and test AVs in a range of everyday, real-life traffic scenarios in Ontario, Canada. Called the Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN), the Canadian government has invested $80 million (£61 million) over a five-year period in support of the project.

German company Traffic Data Systems says its OIML-R134-1 certified low- and high-speed weigh-in-motion system uses three rows of OIML-certified Lineas sensors and is a legally accepted WIM product for enforcement (WIM-E) and tolling applications (WIM-T) to be used on all kinds of roads. For heavy goods vehicles the system can cope with speeds between five to 120km/h while for light goods vehicles the upper limit is 140km/h. TomTom (TT) has announced their revamped developer portal which includes enhancements to its product offerings and a pricing model aimed at small and medium sized business to integrate TT’s Online API into their applications. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), in San Antonio, has been awarded a $750,000 (£573,000) contract from the Transportation Research Board to help state and local agencies address cyber-attack risks on current transportation systems and those posed by future connected vehicles. Cyber security firm, Praetorian will support SwRI by conducting a security audit of traffic management systems and develop a web-based guide to help transportation agencies learn how to safeguard equipment.

Moovit has added 5 million public transport stops worldwide to its app and increased the number of local editors, Mooviters, who map out their own transport networks where public data is not readily available, to 200,000.
