In an effort to reduce collisions caused by deer, moose, elk and caribou in Ontario, the highway ministry’s eastern region is now testing sophisticated motion-detection systems that flash a warning to motorists only when animals are on or near the highway.

Radar technology company Navtech Radar has won the Highly Commended award in the Alarm and Detection category of the Detektor International Awards 2013 with their new AdvanceGuard AGS1600 Extreme radar surveillance solution. US-based detection technology company Aldis has received UK Highways Agency approval for its 3D vision-based vehicle and pedestrian detection system with tracking for traffic signal control and data collection. Aldis GridSmart replaces in-road detection technology with a single, static 3D camera at signal controlled junctions. The system can also be used for multi-directional traffic surveys, including complex turning movements and vehicle classification, as well as pedestrian detection and counting.

Comprehensive, high quality data is useful, or even essential, for many types of decision making and transport is no exception. Planners and researchers can cite countless situations where their understanding of transport problems and their ability to evaluate potential solutions is constrained by inadequate data.

Navtech Radar is demonstrating its AdvanceGuard wide area surveillance solution in a live busy environment, in the middle of Hammersmith Road in Central London during TranSec 2013.
