By this summer, the TOPGRD, 77GHz Compact Line traffic management sensor should be available globally. But visitors to the stand of smartmicro can get a sneak-peak at the hand-size big-data unit that fits unobtrusively on light poles or overhead gantries.
The software-defined radar system can be used for many things, from speed enforcement and wrong-way detection to vehicle positioning and identification of pedestrians and cyclists.
The forward-firing radar can scan up to six traffic lanes and ahead up to 250m. Images are taken every 50 milliseconds, meaning accuracy is the hallmark of TOPGRD which is suitable for any country where 77GHz radar is allowed by law, according to Daniel Reitenauer, head of business development for smartmicro.
In long-range mode, range accuracy is around 0.6m within a minimum detection range of 1.2m and a maximum detection range of 240m. Meanwhile, in short-range mode, range accuracy is 0.1m for a detection range between 0.2m and 40m.
