Balfour Beatty is to deliver the Bay Street Innovation Corridor project for the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) in Florida as part of a $44 million deal.
The project marks the first phase of the JTA's Ultimate Urban Circulator autonomous vehicle service – a new automated people mover system for Downtown Jacksonville and its surrounding neighbourhoods.
Once complete, the three-phase Ultimate Urban Circulator will expand Jacksonville’s current skyway from two and a half miles to ten miles.
The skyway is an elevated monorail system that operates above the streets of Downtown Jacksonville, crossing the St. Johns River to Kings Avenue on the Southbank.
JTA CEO Nathaniel P. Ford Sr says: “This award represents a major milestone for the Ultimate Urban Circulator, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority and Downtown Jacksonville. We are confident the Balfour Beatty team and its partners will deliver a world-class project on behalf of the taxpayers of Jacksonville, placing our community at the forefront of innovation.”
Balfour and its partners will oversee 60% of the design of the corridor as well as utilising integrated progressive design build methods.
These partners include Superior Construction Company Southeast, Beep, WGI, Stantec Consulting Services and Miller Electric.
