Transport design firm STV has been chosen as lead designer for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA’s) $1.3bn Green Line Light Rail Extension (GLX). MBTA expects the 4.3 mile expanded route to reduce up to 26,000 regional daily vehicle miles travelled, improving air quality and reducing congestion. Fluor Corporation (Fluor) has been chosen to lead the design-build joint venture team to operate and maintain the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) Automated People Mover project for the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). It aims to provide passengers and employees with reliable and time-certain access to the airline terminals with the design and construction commencing later this year. The passenger service is scheduled for 2023.

Fluor Corporation (FC) has been selected by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to lead a joint venture for the Green Line Light Rail Extension in Boston, valued $2 billion (£1.5 billion). The project aims to provide a local and regional mobility one-seat ride to downtown Boston, address transportation concerns, reduce the number of automobiles on local roads and combat air pollution.

Balfour Beatty Living Places (BBLP) has been awarded a five year Highways Services Partnership contract extension by Southampton City Council which aims to provide an efficient, sustainable and community focused highways service. The extension builds on a 10 year contract which started in October 2010 and increases it until the end of September 2025.

Highways England has awarded a £115 million ($152 million) asset support contract extension of 17 months to Balfour Beatty and Mott MacDonald to continue its service delivery for Area 10; covering Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester. The contract will run from November 2017 to March 2019. The current asset support contract delivers a range of service delivery and maintenance activities such as 24/7 incident response, to ensuring the safe operation of the 570km of the road network.

The long-established Balfour Beatty VINCI joint venture is to be awarded two rail contracts in the UK by High Speed 2 (HS2), worth a combined total of around US$3.3 billion (£2.5 billion). West Sussex County Council in the UK, in partnership with Balfour Beatty Living Places, has begun trialling the use of drones to inspect bridges across the county. Trials have so far been carried out on two bridges, resulting, they say, in around US$10,000 (£8,000) of savings compared to traditional inspections.
