Start-up businesses with innovative solutions to transport challenges such as congestion, overcrowding, emissions and road safety, are being encouraged to apply for a unique new accelerator programme launched at Cenex-LCV. Australian consultancy Cica Group has announced the appointment of Brian Negus, strategic adviser for the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), as chair of their board. International technology company Ricardo is to join forces with cyber security specialist Roke Manor Research to develop solutions that will make autonomous and connected transport robust against cyber attack. Many of today’s new vehicles are already connected over the air for telematics and maintenance, for safety systems such as eCall, by consumers using insurance-based monitoring technology, and by the many smartphone apps available to vehicle owners.

The UK’s Transport Systems Catapult (TSC) has announced the launch of the Intelligent Mobility Data Hub (IMDH) at the Cenex-LCV event today. The hub provides a neutral, secure platform for transport organisations to allow access to and analyse their data. The hub currently stores many valuable data sets from government organisations, transport and technology businesses, offering multiple insights into road travel and haulage patterns in the UK.

Mercedes-Benz Vans is investing US$50 million in new joint venture with US start-up Via to bring Via’s on-demand shuttle service, already launched in New York, Chicago and Washington DC, to Europe. The service will launch in London this year. The joint venture will also partner with public transit operators across Europe, licensing Via’s on-demand shuttle operating System to enable cities to significantly improve mobility while reducing congestion without incurring any additional infrastructure costs.

The UK Electric Nation project is due to announce its initial findings on the first day of the Cenex Low Carbon Vehicle event (LCV2017) this week, which will show that smart charging can provide a key solution to the challenge of the demand from increasing numbers of electric vehicles (EVs) on electricity networks.

Scania is to deliver 140 buses for public transport in Kristiansand, south-west of the Norwegian capital Oslo. The delivery includes Scania Citywide LE Suburban Hybrid, Scania Citywide LE Suburban and Scania Higer A30 buses, each in a range of specifications. All buses can run on biodiesel. The buses will go into service in July 2018 and will be operated by transport company Boreal Buss, on behalf of the public transport operator Agder Kollektivtrafikk.
