Shanghai Shentong Metro Group has awarded Thales SEC Transport the signalling contract for the Fully Automated Operation (FAO) Line 14 of the City’s Metro. It will provide an integrated management system as well as signalling and supervision solutions with the intention of meeting the demand for metro transport capacity and alleviating traffic in the downtown area. The driverless and highly automated line is scheduled to enter service at the end of 2020.

Thales has been chosen by Italian rail network operator Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) to lead a pool of companies on implementing security systems on 61 RFI stations across various regions in Italy. Over 40% of both 1,000 US and UK adult consumers who took part in a new study feel that the government should apply stricter data security regulations for connected cars (CCs), according to Thales’ E-Security IoT Survey. A combined 60% of both respondents believe that CCs pose security concerns with integrity and malfunctions at the top of the list of apprehensions when asked to identify internet-connected devices which they felt were most vulnerable to hacking.

Thales has supplied its driverless train control system: Seltrac CBTC solution for Santiago de Chile’s new metro lines 3 and 6. The technology aims to ensure safety and efficiency across the entire route, with a 90 second interval between trains as well as lower long-term operating costs and savings in traction power. Thales has tested a new signalling control system on sub-surface trains on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines, which enable trains to run closer together. The test aims to provide a more frequent service, reduce waiting times and help boost capacity for the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. The system will go live on the first section of the network as early as 2018.

Thales has been awarded its third LRT contract in Taiwan by the China Steel Corporation. Karnchang (CK) to deliver the automatic fare collection (AFC) system for the Bangkok metro's Blue Line Extension, utilising its TransCity ticketing solution.
