The European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC) has joined a coalition of stakeholders to promote a stronger EU budget for transport after 2020. It believes that there are transport infrastructure projects that require a commitment from the EU and national public authorities which are vital for the EU’s competitiveness but do not generate the necessary return on investment to attract private investors.

To slash road causalities by 40% by 2020 and combat last year’s 8 tyre-related fatalities and 120 serious injuries, Highways England (HE) has revealed a series of initiatives to mark the end of the Tyre Safety month. Working with the NHS and tyre manufactures, HE is helping family drivers, commuters and commercial drivers keep tyres in top condition. Some of these plans are already being delivered.

The UK Government has announced fund valued £3.64 million ($4.79 million) to upgrade the traffic management technology and improve journey times across the North East Combined Authority area (NECA). It will include upgrades to traffic signals on key regional routes with Automatic Number Plate Recognition Cameras, Variable Message Signs and integration with public transport data from Nexus. The Department of Transport paid £2.8 million ($3.6million) of the fund and the rest came from local authority contribu

The number of Fleet Management (FM) systems in active use is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.7% from almost 0.7 million units in 2016 to 1.4 million by 2021. The findings come from the latest report from Berg Insight: Fleet Management in Australia and New Zealand - 2nd edition, which also estimates that the penetration rate in the total population of non-privately-owned fleet vehicles used by businesses is estimated to increase from 14.8% in 2016 to 27.8% in 2021.

EVgo in collaboration with technology solutions provider Driivz have launched the EVgo Mobile app allowing drivers of electric vehicles (EVs) to locate the nearest charge point in a US network of 980 DC Fast chargers. It allows card-free charging that initiates with a single swipe to the right and enables drivers to check charger availability. The app is available for IOS and Android devices.

The Board of directors of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America has chosen Shailen Bhatt as president & chief executive officer. Bhatt joins ITS America with an extensive background in promoting and advocating for intelligent transportation and was most recently executive director of Colorado Department of Transportation. Bhatt also focused on deploying transportation technology, creating the RoadX program and making Colorado a national innovation leader.

Siemens has been awarded a contract by Coventry City Council (CCC), through the National Productivity Investment Fund, to design and refurbish traffic signal equipment and systems at nine signalised junctions in the region. CCC is renewing life-expired traffic control equipment with the latest designs and management systems to improve network performance and reliability and reduce maintenance costs.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has responded to a report from the RAC Foundation which showed that 8 million local authority parking penalties are issued annually across England and Wales. This figure is included in the Automated Road Traffic Enforcement: Regulation, Governance and Use - for the RAC Foundation report by Dr Adam Snow, a lecturer in criminology at Liverpool Hope University.

Hundreds of thousands of rail passengers will suffer hours of delays and cancellations this month as figures for oversized lorries hitting low bridges (bridge-strikes) peaked in October/ November to around ten reported incidents every day, according to a new campaign by Network Rail. In addition, there are 2,000 bridge strikes every year costing the taxpayer some £23 million ($30 million) in damages and delays.

Teledyne Dalsa (TD) and Teledyne Optech (TO) will showcase their latest imaging solutions for intelligent transportation systems in live demonstrations at ITS Word Congress 2017 in Montréal, Canada. TD will be displaying the Genie Nano with resolutions from VGA to 25 megapixels that offer range in sensor size and image quality with more than 40 colour and monochrome models. It will have a live demonstration, and its multi-exposure feature is useful for red light camera and license plate capture.
