Auxiliary display unit
Eberle Design (EDI) has unveiled the CMU ADU (auxiliary display unit), a rack-mounted display module that provides an LED fourcolour by 32 channel full intersection display. This is combined with a SmartMonitor interface to a CMU-212 cabinet monitor unit (CMU). The company says it designed the new ADU because many transportation agencies no longer supply their personnel with laptops for connecting with instrumentation in on-street cabinets.
Viewcom gets H.264
Traficon has announced the Viewcom/E Max+, a communication board for intersection control. Its task is to transmit traffic data and alarm events issued by VIP (video image processor) vehicle presence detectors. This new module provides H.264 compressed video, which guarantees best quality video while consuming minimal network bandwidth.
It offers quad view functionality that allows an operator to quickly see the whole intersection in a mosaic of four streaming videos.

Solar assisted arrow warning sign
Work Area Protection has announced the ArrowMaster Pro-Line Solar-Assisted Advance Warner, a versatile, low-operating-cost arrow board that provides maximum visibility while directing traffic through construction zones. It was designed to allow the panel to travel parallel with the towing vehicle to cut wind resistance, fatigue and maximise fuel economy. The centre frame support is continuous from front to rear to reduce stress fractures caused by towing and rough roads. The company says that ArrowMaster bo
PCI Express Card
Aaxeon Technologies has launched an 8-port industrial RS-232/422/485 PCI express card. The new MSC-208C, which is universally compatible with up to eight new and legacy RS- 232/422/485 devices, offers a PCI express single high speed serial slot and is fully compliant with PCI express base specifications. It supports a baud rate up to 921.6 Kbps and may be offered with surge and isolation protection (MSC- 208C-SI).
More flexible workzone protection
Impact protection vehicles, often the only form of protection between workers and traffic in many road maintenance and repair operations, are designed to arrest an errant car or truck. Truck-mounted attenuators have been used for many years, but as Brent Kulp of Traffix Devices points out, advances in trailer attenuators, such as on his company's Scorpion, provide the same protection, at lower cost but with much greater flexibility. He points to the Scorpion's unique curved design, which not only redirects
Web-based hurricane evacuation map
Houston TranStar has unveiled a new interactive hurricane evacuation web map for the Houston-Galveston region of Texas, ahead of this year’s hurricane season which begins on 1 June.
LPR to combat lost tolling revenues
Perceptics has launched a new licence plate reader (LPR) aimed at turnpike authorities and e-tolling system integrators to help capture more unpaid tolling revenue from violators. The company claims its new system is a higher performance technology designed to capture license plate data across a wider field of view than existing LPR systems, enabling authorities to read data in situations where a vehicle changes lanes. According to Perceptics, vehicles without pre-paid tolling transponders will typically ch
Transurban opts for Raytheon system
Raytheon has been selected by Transurban (USA) to deliver an integrated tolling and traffic management system for a 22.5km section of the I-495 Capital Beltway in Northern Virginia.
New traffic modelling software release
TSS-Transport Simulation Systems has announced the release of Aimsun 7 which takes the previous version's ability to integrate static traffic assignment, microscopic and mesoscopic modelling and then ramps up the concept of integration to a whole new level with the introduction of the hybrid simulator. TSS claims this eagerly awaited tool has long been at the top of the traffic modelling wish list and allows users to model large scale networks mesoscopically while zooming in microscopically on any areas tha
Australian road pricing, road funding needs more debate
Everyone in the road transport industry in Australia is talking road pricing - everyone, that is, except the politicians. Christine Keyes reports. At the end of 2008, Australia's road transport industry was wringing its collective hands, unable to raise more than $100 million from an individual bank for any Public Private Partnership (PPP). The A$750 million Peninsula Link project, announced by the Victoria Government in March 2009, was the first road project in the country to be put out to market as an ava
Sequential flashing cone lights aid workzone visibility
In the UK alone, Dorman has sold over one million cone lights, which, when dropped onto a road cone, automatically activate an on/off switch. However, the lamp will only illuminate in the hours of darkness or in low light levels (managed by the photocell switch) caused by bad weather.
The company has now developed the ConeLite Synchro, a low-intensity lamp unit to complement the company's highly successful super-bright LED SynchroGuide cone lamp. When placed in a line, both models provide sequential fla
HD CCTV system
Nexcom has expanded its range of security surveillance solutions with the launch of the NViS 8480/8490 specifically designed to address HD CCTV applications. Powered by second generation Intel Core i7/i5 desktop/workstation grade processors with Q67/C206 chipset, the system is able to display and playback full HD videos through 8/16 channels.
Adesta wins Pennsylvania ITS upgrade
Adesta has won a contract to design, procure, install and integrate ITS upgrades, valued at US$8.6 million, for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission at its five tunnel locations, as well as other critical areas along the Turnpike’s east-west mainline and Northeastern Extension.
Siemens' iwatch application
A new mobile application from Siemens called iwatch, based on its Sitraffic Concert traffic management solution, gives service engineers ubiquitous access to real-time traffic information on their iPads while in the field. According to Siemens, the system puts critical information in the hands of those who need it and does it immediately. Pull down menus allow service engineers to quickly search intersections in their area for issues that need attention, eliminating the need to check in with a central traff
Mobile overhead VMS provides long-distance advance warning
This innovative overhead LED warning trailer from Adolph Nissen Elektrobau is designed for use where there are high truck volumes. The Pharos is a mobile three-tier VMS system for long-distance advanced warning. The top sign can be raised to a height of over 7m, enabling it to be seen evenby motorists driving behind a truck.
Vantage Vector
Vantage Vector is the latest addition to Iteris' portfolio of Vantage vehicle detection solutions. The new device, which fuses the company's proven video detection with radar sensor technology to extend the range and richness of data, will begin shipping in the first quarter of 2012. Vantage Vector is an all-in-one vehicle detection sensor with a wide range of intersection sensing capabilities, including stop-bar and advanced zone detection, as well as sensing properties that enable new safety and adaptive
Intrusion warning improves workzone safety
Transpo Industries launched a unique concept in work zone intrusion protection last year. The SonoBlaster impact-activated safety device warns both roadway workers and errant vehicles simultaneously. When impacted, the unit's built-in CO2-powered horn blasts loudly (125 dB) for 15 seconds, signalling crews that their work zone has been violated. This provides critical reaction time to move out of harm's way. The company says there are also resultant safety benefits for the driver, who may be able to take ev
USB 3.0 Flea3 camera
Point Grey has introduced another innovation in imaging with the release of its new Flea3 USB 3.0 camera series. Measuring just 29 x 29 x 30mm, the FL3-U3 is claimed to be the smallest USB 3.0 camera in the world and is designed specifically for the demanding requirements of machine and computer vision applications. The first available models are based on monochrome and colour versions of the Sony IMX036, a high-quality CMOS sensor capable of generating 3.2 megapixel images at 60 FPS. "USB 3.0 is rapidly ga
