SolarBright’s studs send ice warning to drivers
A new smart road stud from New Zealand-based company SolarBright can warn drivers of potentially icy roads and will soon be able to alert traffic management centres and maintenance depots of the treacherous conditions. Once installed in the road the solar-powered studs monitor humidity and temperature and if the temperature drops to 4°C or below the blue LEDs in the stud start to flash to alert drivers of the possibility of ice formation.
Flashing LED from Ninghai Qinghua improves guard rail visibility
Increased road safety is claimed for a novel system from Ninghai Qinghua Electrical designed to improve the conspicuity of guard rails. This solar powered lighting system can be mounted on top of the barrier and features reliable LED technology, using flashing to ensure drivers can see the barriers clearly from a distance or in poor weather conditions with heavy rain or fog.
Edesix shows VideoBadge2 solution for enforcement staff
Edesix is showing a new version of its VideoBadge, which deters confrontations between the public and enforcement staff by filming incidents.
The original VideoBadge, which is worn on the enforcement or police officer’s clothing, was introduced in 2011; by sliding down the front, the camera lens was exposed and started to record the scene, while a visible sign saying ‘recording in process’ was revealed. This frequently was enough to stop a verbal dispute developing into a physical one.

EasyPark aims to minimise parking hassle
Motorists drive to a location to do something, not to park. Minimising the effort required to park is the aim of a new system that integrates EasyPark’s new in-car parking payment app with the forthcoming Volvo Sensus Connect in-car information and navigation system.
When a motorist parks up, at a location suggested by Sensus Connect close to the driver’s stated destination, they receive a message on the dashboard display asking if they wish to start a parking transaction.
Bartco and P&D launch joint venture deals at Intertraffic
Two new joint venture companies were introduced to the industry at Intertraffic yesterday. They were created by P&D Specialist Services and Bartco Traffic Equipment in an initiative aimed at tackling new international markets. The first joint venture company is Bartco UK which will be Europe’s first manufacturer of portable, solar-powered, five-colour matrix variable message signs, according to the firm.

Two new temporary road marking tapes are being offered by safety specialist Snoline. Part of Lindsay Transportation Solutions, Snoline says that its new Tempoline and Profiline products are easy to install and offer high conspicuity.
Sick shows smart sensors at Intertraffic
Sick is highlighting three innovations on its stand: an automated hot spot detector, an integrated tunnel sensor and a vehicle profiling system. The VHD Pro (vehicle hotspot detector) combines laser-based 3D modelling and infrared imaging to automatically differentiate between allowable hot spots (such as engines and transmissions) and those which could result in a fire. Without the need for human oversight, the system can detect a worrying hot spot (brakes or load) on a vehicle in less than five seconds. T
Intercomp offers accurate high speed weigh in motion technology
Intercomp is now offering improved high speed, weigh in motion technology. Intercomp’s Eric Peterson vice president said: “The conventional application is that it’s used for screening. What makes it new is that it relies on strain gauge technology. We’ve downsized it.” He added that strain gauge measurement technology offers a greater degree of accuracy than conventional systems.
Vendeka signs Philippines deal at Intertraffic
Vendeka underlined the robust health of the Turkish ITS industry when it signed a multi-million dollar deal with the San Miguel Corporation of the Philippines, at Intertraffic last night. The contract is to implement Vendeka’s Hybrid electronic toll collection (ETC) solution in three major highways in the Philippines. The scope of the project covers three tollways, 60 plazas, 300 lanes and 200,000 RFID tags.
3D-Kennzeichen’s flexible approach to numberplates
Small German company 3D-Kennzeichen is seeking to replace traditional numberplates with its new, polypropylene version, which the company says has several advantages over the existing aluminium type.
Company owner Dr Michael Baueionr comes at the sector from an unusual direction. A label industry specialist, he is also a polymer chemist with a longstanding interest in polypropylene and its qualities.
Czech company cross celebrates Olympics success
Fresh from success in helping the Russian city of Sochi prepare for the Winter Olympics, Czech traffic technology company Cross is showing two new products at Intertraffic.
Its RS 4S traffic controller is a more compact, cost-efficient version of its existing model. JCM’s iPro-RC unit achieves parking market success
German parking technology specialist JCM says that it is achieving good market penetration in the market with some leading firms in the sector. The iPro-RC unit features twin large capacity chambers and roller friction recycling technology, allowing it to recycle notes that have been paid in for instant payouts. Other features include proven note acceptance technology and a lockable cashbox that can be removed when required.
Kig shows Veresis security system for numberplates
Slovenian numberplate producer Kig is showing its latest high-security production system, Veresis, which is designed to remove the risk of counterfeiting and ensure tight control over a nation’s numberplate production.
Veresis is a software system that covers every aspect of numberplate production, from its creation to its eventual disposal.
A numberplate producer buying the system is linked electronically to the country’s government ministry responsible for vehicle registration.

US bus operator First Capital Connect has announced the launch of its new queue-reducing mobile ticketing app, allowing passengers to use their mobile phone or tablet as a ticket machine.
Developed by Masabi, the app can be downloaded the app to the user’s phone, enabling them to instantly purchase peak and certain off-peak tickets for immediate use.
Norwegian Public Roads Administration Turns to IBM for centralised tolling
The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) has selected IBM to design, build and deliver a new centralised road toll system across Norway.
Drawing upon IBM's extensive traffic system management experience, big data and analytics capabilities, and mobile expertise, the new toll system, called AutoPASS Grindgut, will process more than 470 million vehicle passages per year, accounting for approximately US$1.3 billion in road user charges.
