Innovative measures to cut the number of rush hour road works have been announced by UK Transport Secretary Philip Hammond. Under ‘lane rental’ schemes, councils would be able to charge utility companies to dig up the busiest roads during peak times when road works cause the most disruption. Companies would be able to avoid the charges by carrying out works during quieter periods or, if appropriate, at night.

The Northern Capital Highway (NCH) consortium has been named the preferred bidder in the tender for the central section of St Petersburg’s Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD) project. Should NCH win the tender process it will build and then operate the entire stretch of the toll road. State Farm and Hughes Telematics are announcing a major joint effort to bring connected vehicle services and telematics savings programmes to drivers across North America. The new effort is called In-Drive and has been tailored specifically for State Farm policyholders by Hughes. The service debuts in Illinois in September with more states to be added in 2012.

QDVC, a joint venture between Qatari Diar and French group Vinci has won the contract for the new phase of work in the light railway development in the Qatari town of Lusail near Doha. The contract, worth US$536.67 mllion, and covers civil engineering work on eight underground stations, the construction of a viaduct crossing a motorway and preliminary work on a light rail transport depot and maintenance workshop. The project is expected to take 38 months to complete.
